Born in Atlanta, GA I was very interested as a child in performing and directing my friends in stories created on the spot. My father was a traveling salesman so my family was uprooted several times exposing me to a multiplicity of personalities and perceptions of the world. After returning to Atlanta as a teenager, I was exposed to and mingled among a group of artists who would become some of the most talented performers in the world (Jermaine Dupri, Dallas Austin, Rico Wade, TLC, Michael Bivins). This lead me to what would be my destiny. I began producing and directing music videos and other visual content for artist such as Usher, Outkast, Monica, TLC, Tyrese, Jermaine Dupri, Rico Wade, Julie Dexter, Arrested Development, Goodie Mob and Brian McNight to name a few. A few of the press releases for these projects are still archived in Billboard. I’ve also had the pleasure of producing for some of the most talented directors such as Bryan Barber (writer/director, Idlewild) and Bille Woodruff (director, Honey).
I earned my Bachelor of Arts & Sciences degree in Journalism with a concentration in Broadcast News in 1992 from Georgia State University. I then furthered my education in 2005, earning my Master of Fine Arts degree in Digital Filmmaking & Art from Georgia State University.
I founded my first film production company in 1995, Film Noire. This company was among the few African-American film production companies owned by women at that time. I quickly climbed the ranks as an industry player and garnered projects with the Majors. I have directed and produced projects for Bravo, Sony-Columbia, Black Entertainment Television, TV One, Warner Brothers, Arista Records, Motown Records, Organized Noize, LaFace Records, JVC Japan, as well as other major media companies.
Forming my second production company in 1997 proved and solidified my industry instincts. Successful credits of this company include: The Book Of Love , a feature film starring Robin Givens, Salli Richardson and Robert Townsend; The Come Up, a sexy Docu-Drama ~ reality series co-produced by Jermaine Dupri of SoSo Def Recordings; as well as several projects for BET.
In the fall of 2006 I joined the esteemed faculty of Clark Atlanta University’s Division of Communication Arts. At Clark Atlanta I have been awarded the honor of serving as a W.E.B. DuBois Faculty Fellow. In addition to my full-time film faculty appointment, I serve as the Division of Communication Arts Director of Internships under the Department Chair. I’m also the Film Coordinator for the film concentration. I’ve contributed to the development of several Mass Media Arts courses, most notably a new convergent media writing course. Of the many service and scholarship opportunities I’ve participated in, one of the most notable is Clark Atlanta’s Communication and Social Change Conference in which I’ve presented my paper, Black Female Sexuality in Film and Television: The Effect on Media Arts Students. This paper was subsequently published in the Communication Arts Forum. Currently I’m expanding this essay.
In the summer of 2010 I launched a course I created and developed entitled, The Films of Spike Lee. Lee’s work with She’s Gotta Have It inspired me to pursue a career in filmmaking. He also studied film in the department at Clark Atlanta in which I teach. Lee is an American icon and I feel that his film canon and career will especially inspire HBCU students.
